Greater accountability: Private lessons provide no way to escape accountability. Either you practiced or you didn’t and it’s quickly apparent which it was! Private lessons teach personal discipline and build a strong work ethic, character traits absolutely necessary for success in life.
One-on-one attention: It is difficult for teachers to give individual attention in a large ensemble setting. In contrast, a private teacher is able to note areas of struggle and give individual-specific assistance.
Pursue individual interests: In music class, the teacher must teach from a specific curriculum. Repertoire cannot possibly be selected based on everyone’s personal preference, so the music may or may not be a style everyone enjoys. With private lessons, a child has a greater opportunity to pursue his or her own musical tastes. A student who enjoys his/her music will naturally be more motivated!
Instruction based on learning styles: Everyone learns a different way. Some are aural, some are visual, some are hands-on, etc. Private lessons help students achieve the greatest amount of success in the least amount of time.
Provides a sense of identity: Private lessons give students a sense of identity. It is a special time just for them where they can meet with their teacher and work together to improve their own skills and build confidence.
Not hampered by group ability: If a student is naturally gifted, private lessons are a great way for students to explore their talents.
Opportunity to perfect individual skills: With the one-on-one attention a student receives in the private lesson, he or she is able to focus on developing individual skills. Group rehearsals are not the place to work on specific parts and the difficulties that go along with them. Individual practice time at home and time spent in private lessons are the time to work on getting your part perfected and improving your skills.
